The paddle stroke that moves a Dragon Boat is beneficial to the alleviation of lymphedema, a symptom related to breast cancer surgery. That’s one reason why survivors – men and women, around the world- have rallied to the sport of Dragon Boating. But what unites us is not the boat – it’s the uncommon bonding and friendships that are formed in this community. Together, we create a strength and camaraderie that transforms us from survivors… into Warriors!

Practice Sessions

Our home water is Spa Creek, the headwaters of the Annapolis Harbor. Our boats are out on the water on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday most weeks during the outdoor season, when the combined air and water temperatures total at least 100. Members go to TEAM SNAP to sign up for practicesNon-Members, to join us as a guest, notify us HERE.

Technical Tuesdays, 5:45pm
This practice is where you would come to learn the basics as a new paddler, and to advance your skills as an intermediate or experienced paddler. This practice emphasizes the technique essential for effective paddling and for preventing injury.

Wednesday Paddle, 11:30am
A day-time paddle for those of us able to spend some extra time on the water. This is not a coached paddle. So it is not appropriate for beginner paddlers.

Power Thursdays, 5:45pm
New paddlers are welcome to Power Thursdays after they have attended at least three Tuesday paddles and get the “OK” from the coaching staff. Power Thursdays provide an aerobic workout as we practice racing strategies and work on endurance.

Saturday Open Paddle, 9:00am
This coached practice is open to all.  Start your weekend out on the water!

Soft Paddle, One Saturday a month
Once a month we take a Soft Paddle on Saturday morning. Experienced paddlers handle the boat, so anyone recovering from treatment can join us; you can paddle or not as you wish. Come and try it and enjoy the nourishment that being on the water – and with friends – can provide.

Training And Strengthening

ADBC is a year-round club. We work to maintain our strengthening and support of each other in many different ways. Some are social. Others focus on the physical.

Indoor paddle practices
Members can practice throughout the winter at an indoor pool facility.

Fitness Workouts
We use the Pip Moyer Recreational Center in Annapolis to run an array of workouts to build and maintain strength and endurance. See here to find out how personal training can help with conditioning.
