Who We Are

The Annapolis Dragon Boat Club was formed in the Fall of 2010 to promote the 2500 year old sport of dragon boat racing and to provide a supportive environment for fitness and the recovery and strengthening of persons who have survived cancer. The first paddling season occurred in 2011.

Michael E. Ashford, entrepreneur and breast cancer survivor, had the insight and resolve that led to the formation of the Annapolis Dragon Boat Foundation. The Foundation is serving as an avenue for supporter donations to assist the club in outreach to the greater Annapolis community with a concentration on breast cancer recovery. The sport of dragon boat paddling has a proven track record in the recovery process. The Annapolis community is sincerely grateful for Mike’s foresight, generous contributions, and efforts in starting the club and foundation on behalf of survivors of a pervasive disease.

A core group of Board members has grown to 65 club members. Members, both cancer survivors and community supporters, believe in the cause while also participating in an activity to promote wellness. Members have participated in festivals and regattas in Maryland, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Florida, and Washington DC!

The club practices in a pink boat and a red boat on the scenic Spa Creek of Annapolis, generating awareness of this sport and curiosity about its many benefits. South Annapolis Yacht Centre (formerly Sarles Marina), in the Eastport area of Annapolis, is the club’s home base. This is where the boat is kept in a covered slip and where the team gathers for practices and socializing.

No experience is necessary to join the club. ADBC welcomes paddlers of all ages and all skill and fitness levels. When paddling, you get a great aerobic workout that is easy on your joints. You will discover that the added encouragement you receive will make fitness easier to achieve!

Whether your interest is recreational or competitive, our coaches will train you in safety, timing, and technique until you are paddling in perfect unison with your teammates!

ADBC will meet your need for fun, fitness, health, friendship, and even some competition!
